Work Place Physical/Emotional Injury

We work with individuals who have been injured physically/emotionally and are experiencing symptoms of situational trauma, PTSD,  or adjustment disorder  by providing individualized EMDR and Cognitive Behavioural Interventions.
Early intervention is imperative.  We will work with you using EMDR, Somatic Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to develop a treatment plan which responds to your traumatic experience,  guiding you on your healing journey.

Some groups of people are disproportionately affected by PTSD because of the nature of their work. Among those at higher risk of PTSD are public safety personnel, including paramedics, firefighters (career and volunteer), police as well as Indigenous emergency managers, search and rescue and public safety communications personnel (911 operators, dispatchers), correctional services officers, border services officers, flight attendants and operational intelligence personnel.

Therapeutic Interventions Explained

One or more of the below interventions will be employed to tailor make personalized support for adults, teens or children. Interventions will be selected based on personal effectiveness, preference and client responsiveness.

How is EMDR used?

EMDR is an acronym that stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy. Clients come to treatment for support on existing concerns. The psychologist will help the client identify the dynamics of the present concerns and how to adaptively manage them. An overall treatment plan will be developed that will align with the client’s goals.
EMDR is an eight-phase treatment method. History taking, client preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure and reevaluation of treatment effect.

How does CBT work?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a negative cycle. CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts. What Are the 7 Steps of CBT? Identify the problem. Set goals. Identify obstacles. Challenge automatic and intrusive thoughts. Identify and challenge core beliefs and assumptions. Enact lifestyle and behavioural changes. Employ problem-solving skills.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS is a transformative tool that conceives of every human being as a system of protective and wounded inner parts led by a core Self. We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing. Just like members of a family, inner parts are forced from their valuable states into extreme roles within us. Self is in everyone. It can’t be damaged. It knows how to heal. IFS is frequently used as an evidence-based psychotherapy, helping people heal by accessing and healing their protective and wounded inner parts. IFS creates inner and outer connectedness by helping people first access their Self and, from that core, come to understand and heal their parts.

Bibliotherapy

Bibliotherapy (also referred to as book therapy, reading therapy, poetry therapy or therapeutic storytelling) is a creative arts therapy that involves storytelling or the reading of specific texts.
During the bibliotherapy process, there are four stages that children must experience: identification, catharsis, insight and universalization (Stamps, 2003, Jackson, 2006).

Book Session

Somatic Therapy - Guided Drawing

Guided Drawing encourages bilateral, rhythmic repetition of movements and applies particular, archetypal shapes as intervention tools in order to structure the experience, if necessary. (Elbrecht 2018) During the Healing Trauma with Guided Drawing online training the question how to apply this modality with children arises on a regular basis. Children benefit from Guided Drawing just as much as adults, however, the facilitation has to be adjusted to match their age-specific needs and learning style.
